The most beautiful king headed turtle in India is the roof headed turtle ,which gives it a look of wearing a king’s crown. Found mostly in Northern India and mainly in the Chambal River. Females are generally double the size of the males growing upto 23 inches, this beautiful creature has been termed as a critically endangered specie and can be rarely found in India now. These turtles have been severely affected by reducing rivers and hunt for its meat and shell. Due to their high mortality then have rarely been researched properly by the scientists After rapid reconnaissance, two protected riverside hatcheries were established along the Chambal River near Garhaita (lower section, Uttar Pradesh) and Baroli Villages (upper section, Madhya Pradesh) in early February(2006). There should be more research and rescue camps for these turtles and the Forest Associations /Committees should take strict measures in saving this creature from extinction.
