Lorikeets are native birds found in coastal areas around Australia. Although there are six different native species and all are kept in captivity, the two most commonly kept species are the Rainbow Lorikeet and the Scaly-breasted Lorikeet. Lorikeets are considered a small to medium parrot and range in size from 150mm (6″) to 400mm (16″). The colour of the bird depends upon the species and the variation with in that species, however bright colours are common and popular. In most species it is very difficult to determine the sex of the bird as both males and females look the same. Most lorikeets are outgoing in nature. Some species are more aggressive than others and some may have a tendency to become territorial. As pets, hand-reared birds are the best choice as they are more familiar with people and easier to handle. This the reason Lorikeet’s are captured often and are ket as mere pets as these birds require good nutrition, people generally fail to maintain them and hence these birds are very rare and costly to find.
